“iAM Smart” System in Smart City Blueprint for Hong Kong

The Chief Executive announced in the 2017 Policy Address that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (“HKSAR”) government Government will provide Electronic Identity (“eID”) for all Hong Kong residents, allowing them to use a single digital identity and authentication to conduct government and commercial transactions online. This will foster the development of a new economic service model that emphasizes direct interface with residents and consumers.

iAM Smart Blueprint

As a key digital infrastructure for smart city, an “iAM Smart” System will be set up to enable residents to access electronic services and conduct online transactions in a more convenient and secure manner. The proposed “iAM Smart” could be regarded as a common key for digital identity authentication for members of the public to login and access various government and commercial electronic services in a simple and secure manner. “iAM Smart” would be made available for all Hong Kong residents to apply and use on voluntary basis

On March 29th 2019, the HKSAR government announced that EMPTECH as one of the contractors of Electronic Identity (eID) System, who will provide implementation, support and maintenance of registration system for the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer, helping the Hong Kong government to build a smart city blueprint.

The Hong Kong government will offer eID to all Hong Kong residents in 2020 as a digital identity for government affairs and business transactions. eID system will adopt at least two biometric features as identity authentication to improve the security of transactions. Not only the e-commerce, it also supports cross-boundary mutual recognition of documents and certificates, which can greatly reduce the working pressure of service agencies and improve administrative efficiency. It brings citizens, commercial institution and government a lot of benefits on security, authenticity, and reliability.
